What is a Pointing Lab?

A "Pointing  Lab" is just a regular Labrador Retriever. The term is used to identify Labradors who will "point" quarry in the upland field rather than the traditional "flushing". There have been many Labs throughout history that have pointed upland game.

At Appalachian Pointing Labs, we breed and use Labradors that have been certified through hunt testing guidelines set by the American Pointing Labrador Association. This in no way guarantees a pointing dog, it just allows and increases the percentage of throwing Labradors who point.

Currently, no genetic material has been found that differentiates a Labrador that will "point" compared to one that will "flush". There do seem to be some innate behaviors when pairing Labs that "point" to have offspring that also behave similarly.

"Today was only her second time on pheasant with some rough conditions but she made her humans very proud."

"Finished force fetch in only two weeks. Just so willing to please, does whatever you ask. Made the right pick with him."

"This pup has great bird drive and hunting instincts, but a great off switch in the house. A very calm laid back dog at home. Just what we were looking for. Can't go wrong with a repeat breeding."

"He's such a nice biddable puppy. Can't thank you enough for this pup/breeding. "

"Hyde and Seek Beretta went on her first duck hunt at 9 months old today.  It was a slow day on blue wing teel but she sat in one place for 2 hours steady as a rock and watched every unshootable wood duck fly around the blind and never made a peep or flinch. When the only flock of teal that came within range showed up the shooters nicked one and she was totally steady on the shot. We didn't send her for the retrieve because he landed in the corner of the field 150 yards out, but she jumped him up on the way walking out using her nose.  He was still very capable of flying and she didn't chase wildly.  She is testing for CPR on October 10.  Steadiness is her strongest suit especially for such a young dog but She gives it all on every retrieve, swims fast, but when she is next to you she is very relaxed and deliberate.  She does hand deliveries every time."Note: She passed her CPR Hunting title!
